IS businesswoman and town councillor Lorraine Hillier thinking of going into banking?
She recently opened the Upstairs Downstairs tea shop in Duke Street to accompany the Hot Gossip coffee house in Friday Street that she opened more than six years ago.
So when she vehemently opposed a planning application by the owner of the Barclays Bank building in Hart Street to convert it into a bar and restaurant, fellow councillor David Silvester jokingly suggested she might like to take it over.
Lorraine, who banks with Barclays, admitted the takeover would have its advantages, adding: “Then I might get a loan or an overdraft.”
• As the Standard reported last week, the bank has a lease on the building for some years and owner Frederick West says he only submitted the application in case Barclays decided to close the branch.
