IT didn’t take long for hostilities to break out again following the mayor-making ceremony in Henley last week — four hours, in fact.
Councillor Will Hamilton, a member of the opposition Conservative group, sent an email to new Mayor Martin Akehurst, of the ruling Henley Residents’ Group, to congratulate him — and complain about his predecessor, Stefan Gawrysiak.
He said it was “disgraceful” of the retiring mayor not to recognise his wish to second Cllr Akehurst’s nomination.
Cllr Hamilton continued: “You missed out on a very complimentary speech that I wrote on the plane last night, which even your fellow HRG councillors would have found amusing. We weren’t even allowed to speak to the nominations, so you won’t ever know what you missed out on.”
Councillor Gawrysiak, who was copied in on the message, replied and told Cllr Hamilton: “I must be as jet-lagged as you clearly are. If you are going to second then you do need to make it clearer. It was clear from my point of view and on the council papers that Jeni [Wood] was going to second Martin.”
