CALLS for park and ride to be introduced to Henley brought back memories for Mary Burge, who says she first suggested the idea more than 20 years ago.
The 85-year-old, who lived in Henley from 1984 to 1995 and now lives in Shiplake, had a letter published in the Henley Standard in June 1994, proposing two such schemes, one for each end of town, to solve the problem of long-term parking in the town centre.
Ms Burge said: “A park at each end of the town is needed and could be partly funded by all the businesses in Henley which cannot provide parking facilities for their staff. Once all long-term parking by commuters is banned from the town centre, I feel sure that more visitors and shoppers will return to what was once a most attractive market town.”
Last week, the Henley Standard reported that Oxfordshire County Council leader Ian Hudspeth had been asked by locals to include a park and ride scheme in his draft transport plan for the county, which is due to published next spring.
