Happier memories

TALKING of thoughtfulness, two Diary readers have made contact following the appeal by Pauline McMullan on this page two weeks ago for information about her mother Jeanette, who died tragically in 1964, when Pauline was four.

At the time, mother and daughter were living with Pauline’s grandparents Bill and Ethel Benson, who ran the Victoria pub in Henley. After Jeanette’s death, Pauline was taken to Scotland by her father and now lives in Edinburgh.

Arthur Emmett, from Tilehurst, called to say he was a regular at the pub and remembered the family well and Brian Hayes has pictures of Jeannette. I have put both men in touch with Pauline and, needless to say, she is thrilled.

She says: “Arthur asked me to keep in touch and we have agreed to meet up in the pub when I next go to Henley.”
