Faded memory of visit by Princess Elizabeth

STAFF at the Lashbrook House care home in Shiplake got an unexpected history lesson while clearing out an old filing cabinet.

Administrator Gwyneth Ward found a cutting from the Henley Standard dated March 17, 1950, reporting on the home’s official opening.

The ceremony was attended by Princess Elizabeth and drew large crowds as people fought for a view of the future Queen.

Ms Ward said the cutting had been stuffed in a plastic wallet at the back of a drawer and was badly faded and crumpled.

She said: “It was obviously something that had been kept as a record for a long time and forgotten about. It was in a very poor condition. You could make out bits and pieces but it had turned brown with age.
