All you could want to know about airport...

DID you know that Dubai is the second most popular destination for people flying from Heathrow?

Or that more than 70 million passengers pass through the airport every year — more than the entire population of the UK? That’s an average of 1,286 flights and 191,200 passengers every day.

How do I know these precise facts? They come from Heathrow Airport Operations Manual, a new book written by Robert Wicks, 45, and published by Haynes. Robert is married to Tanya Wicks, marketing manager at estate agents Davis Tate in Bell Street, Henley, and they have lived in the area for 14 years, currently in Charvil.

Apart from all the technical details the book contains, the amazing thing about it is that Robert wrote it in his spare time as he works in sports marketing.

Originally from South Africa, he says: “I’ve been flying to and from Heathrow for many years and have always been intrigued by how the airport operates, so I decided I should take on the challenge to find out. The complexity of the operation, the dedication of the staff and the hive of activity going on behind the scenes have blown me away and I feel privileged to have had a rare behind-the-scenes view of how it all comes together.”
