Centenary of arson attack on village church

THIS week marks the 100th anniversary of an alleged arson attack on Wargrave parish church.

Alan Hawkins, of Reading Road, Henley, showed me some old black and white postcards depicting the villagers holding a service in the aftermath of the fire.

“It is a well-known series of photographs,” he says. “There are others with firemen and different views of the church. The fire was said to have been started by the Suffragettes but there was no real proof.”

Mr Hawkins, who collects postcards as a hobby, said: “I expect there were about 100 made of each picture. I bought them at a fair in Twyford 10 years ago.”
