Could solar power be the future of boating?

THIS unusual-looking vessel is a solar-powered boat.

The prototype was created by members of the Henley Inventors Club who hope to encourage schools, universities and others to follow suit in the hope of staging an annual regatta.

They also plan to develop a boat fast enough to challenge a top-flight rowing crew.

The boat is based on a Marsport K2 Kevlar canoe and has 1,000W of panels and two 550W 12V motors. It took 10 weeks to build at a cost of £3,600.

The inventors have tested the boat on the Thames three times.
