This chutney would blow your head off

CHRIS HACKETT admits his new chutney recipe might be explosive. You may remember the Henley Standard front-page story last July in which Margaret Goodwin told how her fridge door was blown off at her flat in Homelands Way, Henley, as a result of fermenting chutney.

The 67-year-old had been given the chutney by her neighbour Mr Hackett, a qualified chef with more than 25 years’ experience.

As the story itself exploded and went round the world, Mr Hackett insisted his chutney (or relish as he prefers to call it) was not to blame, although he did see the funny side.

Now he the 72-year-old has come up with three more recipes, called Valencian Bang Bang, Typhoon and Bombay Fury. It the last of these, which is loaded with hot Asian spices, that Mr Hackett says could be truly volatile.

He says: “This is a chutney, not a relish like the other one, which didn’t do anything to a fridge. This one seriously could do some damage….but only if you eat too much.”
