Sixth-formers have flair for business

Sixth-formers have flair for business

KEEPING up the tradition of impressing the judges in the Young Enterprise competition, students from The Abbey once again excelled — winning the Reading area finals and walking away with a number of awards.

Three teams, totalling 26 sixth formers, entered the competition this year. “Flare” produced an educational children’s book with Teddy taking readers on a journey through environmental issues; “whisperrr” produced relaxation packs; and “Chroma” made environmentally friendly tote bags.

Flare won the Reading area finals and are now through to the Berkshire county final in May.

They also won the Enterprise Award and the Organisation and Management Award. Their educational book’s illustrations have been hand-drawn by talented team member Georgina. Books can be ordered from the Flare website.

David Lamont from Blandy & Blandy, one of the judges at the Reading area finals, said: “Flare were a standout team and did fantastically well at every stage of the competition.

“Their business idea and products were inspiring, well considered, original and ‘real world’ — so much so that I can see a clear gap in the market for such an offering.”
