New site for Caversham free school

A TEMPORARY site for a new free school in Caversham has been announced.

The Heights Primary School has agreed terms with Reading Borough Council for use of the old Caversham Nursery and will open in September.

It has also agreed the purchase of a permanent site within the catchment area and this location will be announced once contracts have been exchanged.

The site for the school’s temporary home, just off the Gosbrook Road, will be used for up to two years while the permanent facilities are developed.

This will enable the council to offer reception-aged children places at The Heights’ on National Offer Day, Wednesday April 16.

Karen Edwards, headteacher of the new school, said: “We are really excited at the prospect of welcoming the first pupils of The Heights in September.

“While we had hoped to find somewhere within catchment, this site will ensure The Heights can open in 2014 which has to be our primary goal, particularly when it will only be our home for a short time.

“The site offers us a fantastic opportunity to establish a school for the longer term that is purpose-built to our needs.”

This former nursery site is alongside Westfield Road Recreation Ground and opposite Christchurch Meadows. The buildings were badly damaged in a fire last year so will be refurbished.

The school says it will consider breakfast and after-school clubs to help working parents.
