CHILTERN Edge School in Sonning Common has been honoured for supporting young carers.
The Reades Lane school signed up to Oxfordshire County Council’s Young Carers Standard when it was launched last year.
The scheme helps schools to provide extra support for pupils who care for family members. Chiltern Edge won a silver award for training staff, raising awareness of young carers through school assemblies and providing counselling.
The award was presented during a ceremony at Magdalen College in Oxford and the school will continue working towards attaining gold.
Melinda Tilley, the council’s cabinet member for children, said: “We tend not to think of children as carers but this is the reality for many children of school age who, for various reasons, find themselves responsible for the care of a family member at home.
