THE Bishop of Portsmouth delivered the first J R R Tolkien Memorial Lecture at the Oratory School in Woodcote.
Bishop Philip Egan, who was appointed by the Catholic Church in September, talked to pupils about faith.
The lectures have been launched to celebrate the novelist, whose son Michael attended the Oratory from 1934 to 1939.
Tolkien wrote part of The Lord of the Rings while staying at the school’s Chapel Cottage in 1949.
Among the guests at the inaugural event were his granddaughter Joanna Tolkien, who is one of the Oratory’s benefactors.
