Gym that’s fit for everyone

A NEW fitness suite has been opened at the Piggott School in Wargrave.

A NEW fitness suite has been opened at the Piggott School in Wargrave.

It is part of the school’s new maths block, which was built during the summer holidays, and is equipped with state-of-the-art treadmills, cross-trainers and rowing machines as well as a weights area with dumbbells.

It will be managed by Nuffield Health, a charity with a network of hospitals and wellbeing centres, and was opened by Dr Andrew Jones, managing director of corporate wellbeing.

The suite will be used by pupils and staff during the day and will open to the public after 5pm on weekdays as well as at weekends.

Several pupils who are studying sports science have been given an opportunity to work part-time in the suite.

Brandon Vaughan, 17, is working towards his VRQ in coaching and will work eight hours a week in the suite.

He said: “It’s a good opportunity for me as I want to be a coach. I’m coaching a football team at the moment so it will be a bit awkward fitting in both but it’s good.”

The equipment will be used by students of all ages in PE classes and the school’s sports programmes.

Headteacher Hilary Winter said: “The improvements we have been able to make in partnership with Nuffield Health will enable us to offer a great timetable of fitness classes for both students and the community, with access to the best equipment and opportunities to work with experts in health and fitness.

“At the same time, we are able to improve our PE offer to the students by enhancing the curriculum with a wider range of opportunities.

“We are confident that this partnership will strengthen our curriculum and help build self-confidence among our students.

“It will also give us the opportunity to improve their physical health and well-being and will enable them to thrive in education, both now and in the future.”

Chris Koffman, business development director at Nuffield Health, said: “We are confident that our expertise will help teachers to promote practical and engaging curriculum learning and enhance the current service.”

The suite will offer a range of classes to the public, including yoga and zumba, with membership starting at £25 per month. For more information, email Gillian Maloney at maloneyg@
