Signs tell burglars not to waste their time

FOURTEEN signs have been installed in six Henley roads to deter burglars.

Police have put them on lampposts in Clarence Road, York Road, Church Street, Hop Gardens, Greys Hill and War Memorial Place. The signs are in addition to those already in West Street and Walton Avenue.

The South Oxfordshire Community Safety Partnership paid for the signs, which cost £36 each. They warn burglars that the residents of those streets have used Smartwater kits to mark their property so it can be identified if stolen.

“Smartwater” is a colourless liquid that can be detected using ultra-violet light. Suspected burglars can be screened to see whether they have been in contact with marked items.

Police community support officer Mark Bell said: “We have had a massive take-up. We had a target of 80 per cent of homes in a road to agree before we could put the signs up and that was achieved.
