Celebrating supporters flood pontoon on day of near-disasters

TRADITIONALLY, crews throw their cox into the water after a big win but the Oxford Brookes eight and many of their supporters almost took an unexpected dip on Sunday.
The university’s victory in the Temple Challenge Cup sparked wild celebrations on the river bank and when the crew returned to the jetty their team-mates and supporters rushed out to congratulate them.
The pontoon struggled under the weight of more than 20 people and began to sink into the Thames, causing the celebrating supporters to beat a hasty retreat.
Cox Harry Brightmore was eventually thrown into the river and most of his crew soon followed but there were a few wet feet on dry land!
While on the subject of near mishaps, it appears the excitement of winning the Princess Royal Challenge Cup at the third attempt may have been a bit too much for Lisa Scheenaard.
As the Dutch rower proudly displayed the trophy to the scrum of press photographers and spectators in the stewards’ enclosure, part of it took a tumble.
There was a loud bang and a gasp from the crowd but Scheenaard promptly reassembled the cup and gave a broad smile.
