£350 bicycle to be won by entering 13th On Your Bike

THIS year’s On Your Bike is now open for entries.

Hundreds of people are expected to take part in the 13th annual fun ride, which will start and finish in the playground at Sonning Common Primary School on Sunday, March 31.

It was officially launched at an assembly at the school in Grove Road attended by organiser Geoff Davis as well as Geoff Bowen and his son Rob, from W Cycles in Henley Road, Caversham, which sponsors the event.

Mr Davis encouraged the 300 pupils to sign up with their families.

He said: “It is definitely not a race. It is about getting out and having fun with friends safely and taking your time on the roads. You go round as quickly as you can but as safely as you can.”

The Bowens brought along a blue Giant ARX bicycle and a British-made Whyte 203 model worth £499 to show the children.

The shop is giving away a bike worth up to £350 in a prize draw to be drawn at the school on Monday, March 18. Anyone who enters before that date is eligible.

AW Cycles will set up a gazebo in the playground on the morning of the event so people can make last-minute purchases such as helmets and energy food. It will also carry out safety checks and help replace tyres.

Rob Bowen said: “The event gets more kids on bikes and off their consoles and it is a local event which is why I wanted to support it.”

Geoff Bowen said: “On Your Bike is a fantastic event and everybody seems to love it.

“The biggest job we have on the day of the ride is helping with tyres, puncture repairs and mechanical stuff. We make sure everybody is okay.”

The proceeds from On Your Bike will go to the school, the Fish volunteer centre in the village and the Sonning Common First Responders. Last year’s event raised £4,000 for local charities.

Participants have a choice of a six-, 12 or 20-mile ride. Riders should bring their own helmet and bicycle.

It costs £6 to register in advance or £10 on the day. To sign up, visit www.onyourbikesonningcommon.co.uk
