Secret to long life is to keep breathing, says centenarian

A WOMAN From Emmer Green celebrated her 100th birthday with a party with family and friends.

Eileen Histead was joined by more than 50 people for the buffet celebration at Caversham Heath Golf Club.

The party room was decorated with photographs of her over the years and balloons with “100” written on them.

Mrs Histead is a keen gardener and was given a cake which depicted her sitting on a bench surrounded by potted plants and one of her dogs.

She also received dozens of birthday cards, including one from the Queen.

Mrs Histead was born in Middlesex and moved to Theale with her family when she was nine.

She worked at Burghfield Munitions Factory during the Second World War, where she met her husband John. They were married in 1943 and later had two children, Paula and Phillip.

Mrs Histead only learned to drive when she was 44 and took up archery when she was 50.

She still swims every week as well as gardening and walking her dogs, through which she has found many friends.

Mrs Histead, who has lived in Emmer Green since 1958, said: “It’s marvellous. Some people have come all the way from Scotland and Kent. It’s nice to see them all in one room.

“Everyone has asked me what the secret is — it’s to keep breathing and dancing!”

Mrs Histead’s dog walker friends held a surprise celebration in Clayfield Copse near her home on Wednesday last week.
