Teacher shocked to win £350 off new bike

A TEACHER was taken by surprise when he won £350 towards a new bicycle in a draw to promote this year’s On Your Bike event.

David Foley, the year 5 teacher at Sonning Common Primary School, wasn’t even at the assembly when his name was pulled out of the hat.

He had to be fetched from another room and looked shocked when he entered the school hall to cheers and applause by the 200 children.

Mr Foley, who will be talking part in the ride at the weekend, said: “I did not enter myself in the draw, I think my girlfriend entered me. That is why I looked so shocked when I came in.”

He will receive the discount on the price of an adult’s bike at AW Cycles in Henley Road, Caversham, which sponsors the event.

Pupil Missy Simic, nine, won the helmet in the draw, which was open to anyone who signed up for the event before Mach 18. She said: “I am going to go with my grandparents.”

Geoff Bowen and his son Rob Bowen, who run the bike shop, made the draw at the school and also brought along a Raleigh Burner Balance and Giant ARX kids bikes to show the children.

This is the 13th year of On Your Bike, which will be held on Sunday, starting and finishing at the school in Grove Road. Riders should meet at 10am ready to be set off from 10.30am. Participants have a choice of a six-, 12- or 20-mile ride.

AW Cycles will have a gazebo in the playground where people can make last-minute purchases such as helmets and energy food. It will also carry out safety checks and help replace tyres. Riders should provide their own bike and helmet.

It costs £6 to enter the event in advance or £10 on the day.

Proceeds will go to the school, the Fish volunteer centre in the village and the Sonning Common first responders. Last year’s event raised £4,000.
