Hundreds watch illuminated boat parade

Hundreds of spectators lined the banks of the River Thames in Henley on Saturday evening to watch the second annual Illuminated Boat Parade.

On the water, motorboats of different sizes, paddleboarders, kayakers, sailing boats and a pedalo all decked with lights processed from Fawley Meadows to Henley Bridge. Many boats were decorated to show different themes including Barbies, James Bond, a winter wonderland with penguins and a polar bear, pirates, and an RAF “plane” complete with a light-up propellor and wings on either side of the boat.

The entrants were judged from the Leander Club, which was open to the public with a bar and pizza. A giant illuminated penguin greeted children on arrival, who were all given glow-stick bracelets and necklaces by volunteers.

The event was raising money for charities The Rivertime Boat Trust and the Leander Trust.

A full report and more pictures will be in this week’s Henley Standard.
