Commander spends Christmas at work

WHEN James Parkin was a little boy in Henley, he couldn’t have dreamed of how he would celebrate Christmas many years later.

He has just spent this festive season commanding HMS Montrose on patrol in the Persian Gulf.

James was born in St Mark’s Road 39 years ago and attended Sacred Heart Primary School and later went to Oxford University to study natural sciences.

It was only after graduating that he joined the Royal Navy.

“It was something a little bit different,” he says. “I had no connection to it while growing up and there I was studying rocks and fossils.
