SIMON JONES has a special connection to Henley Royal Regatta. He is the third generation of his family to help run the five-day festival of rowing.
Mr Jones, 44, is a chairman’s assistant in charge of hiring all the staff and this year has appointed 117 people to work for the regatta and another 67 on behalf of the catering company.
He was 10 when he first accompanied his late father, Michael, to work at the Fawley Meadows hospitality area. His grandfather, Norman, was in charge of recruitment.
Mr Jones says: “From an extremely young age I was aware of my dad’s involvement with the regatta. I started coming down at the weekends but at the time I didn’t know what to make of it.
“The year I started working my grandfather was in charge of the recruitment and I believe he did that by going around all the pubs — that was the story I was always told.”
