TWO weeks ago, Henley was celebrating having a record 171 hanging baskets on display in the town centre this summer.
It was a splendid achievement just in time for the royal regatta and before the visit of the Henley in Bloom judges.
But the total became one less on Monday when a newly painted hanging basket pole in Hart Street snapped after being hit by a lorry and crashing to the ground.
The incident happened at about 4pm outside Foam Fashion as the driver of the transport company lorry was reversing.
Richard Jackson, a consultant at Jackson’s estate agents, saw what happened through his office window. He said: “The driver was trying to do a three-point turn but it was a big lorry and he obviously couldn’t see that planter in his rear-view mirrors. We heard a big crunch and it fell to the pavement.
