Photographic proof that things have changed

SIR MATTHEW PINSENT signed copies of a book marking 175 years of Henley Royal Regatta.

Fans gathered at the regatta shop on Friday to meet the four-time Olympic champion who now works for the BBC.

The hardback book, called Henley Royal Regatta: A Celebration In Photographs, is a visual record using images from the archives of Getty Images and the regatta itself as well as contemporary illustrations provided by photographer James Finlay.

Sir Matthew wrote the 5,000-word introduction. “I really enjoyed it,” he said. “I obviously competed in the regatta and I come back each year to be an official so when they said, ‘would you consider doing the book?’ I said, ‘fine’.

“It’s a very visual book and there isn’t a lot of writing. Okay, there’s my intro but that’s not really the point, it’s a visual treat. It was amazing going through those old photos and seeing how the regatta has changed. The illusion the regatta brings off so well is that it is unchanged but actually that’s not true.”
