Charming Joss is life and soul of the party

WHEN Joss Stone walked out on stage at the Henley Festival last Thursday, she took one look at the audience seated comfortably in their deckchairs and wasn’t having any of it.

After opening her hour-and-a-half-long set with The Chokin’ Kind, a cover of the 1967 Waylon Jennings track that featured on her debut album The Soul Sessions, the 27-year-old singer set about amping up the atmosphere.

“We’re going to have a little party, would you like to join us?” she asked, before jumping from the stage to serenade guests in the front row, something which she decided was “much more fun actually”. One by one people popped up to join her, much to her delight “she looks like she should be dancing, and so do you...no, not you!” and pretty soon, revellers poured down the aisles to dance at the front of the stage. From then on, the party never stopped.

She even changed her lyrics in a reaction to over-excited fans, eager to snap a picture of her on their mobile phones, as she sang: “I can’t do a selfie right now, I’m kinda busy, I’m kinda working.”

Wearing a floaty, white skirt and matching backless top, the Grammy Award-winning artist looked every inch the hippy rock chick with her long, blonde, wavy locks and trademark bare feet, complete with flowing scarves tied to the microphone.
