Hoshi is recognised in shops a year on

LAST year’s Top Dog has picked up something of a following, writes Phil Simms.

Hoshi, a Japanese shiba inu, was one of four category winners as well as claiming the overall title.

Owner Annette French, from Hurley, says: “She has definitely become a celebrity.

“Even months after the competition, Hoshi and I are stopped at Waitrose in Henley. People ask, ‘Was your dog the one that won?’

The judges were impressed by Hoshi’s entry in the May The Paws Be With You category where owners were asked to send in a photograph of their dog as a famous person or character.

Mrs French had been told that Hoshi, three, looked like a fox so she went for Fox in Socks based on the Dr Seuss book.

She put stripy baby socks on Hoshi’s paws and put her on top of a box which had the title of the book written on it to complete the look. Her prizes included a night for two — plus dog — at Hotel du Vin, a consultation at Henley Veterinary Centre and a hydrotherapy session at Doggy Dips in Sonning Common.

Mrs French said: “When she went for the swim, she had a great time.

“The staff at the hotel were really lovely and the next morning they all took pictures of her.

“Hoshi loves attention, she loves people, and she enjoyed all of it — even the trip to the vets.”

Mrs French, who has had Hoshi since she was six months old after her previous dog died aged 16, said the competition was so good that she was thinking of entering again this year.

She said: “We are just putting together some pictures. I had a thought of having ‘star-crossed lovers’ but we’ll see. We will still come to the prize-giving event.”
