2,000 attend summer fireworks

ABOUT 2,000 people attended this year’s Henley Summer Fireworks.

ABOUT 2,000 people attended this year’s Henley Summer Fireworks.

The fun began at the Stag and Huntsman field, off Marlow Road, from noon on Saturday as children played games of rounders and frisbee.

There was a refreshments tent, bouncy castles and slides and live music.

The start of the 12-minute display was signalled by a mortar which lit up the sky just before 10.30pm.

Many spectators donated between £5 and £20 per car, which will go to various charities.

Billy Pinches, who runs the event, said: “The whole day was a resounding success. Seeing the children playing in the field by the river was magical. The mortars in the display, which were made in this country for us, were traditionally hand-lit and the rest were fired by computer.

“When they went up it was like a white phosphorous glow and the blast rolled across the field — you could feel it.

“As they drove out, people said what a fantastic set-up it was, how beautiful it was and how the atmosphere was magical.”

Mr Pinches, who owns Henley Plant Hire, said he hoped to have raised more than the £3,500 raised last year.

Mr Pinches added: “Every year we are getting better and better and we have had more support from people.”
