Annual Santa on the Run race launched

THE organisers of Henley?s third annual Santa on the Run charity event are hoping to have more than 200 participants.

THE organisers of Henley?s third annual Santa on the Run charity event are hoping to have more than 200 participants.

Runners will wear fancy dress as they take on the two-mile course, starting and finishing at the River and Rowing Museum, on Sunday, December 8.

The race is suitable for all ages and participants can run, jog or walk.

Prizes will be awarded to the fastest runner under 14 and the best dressed team, family, adult and child under 10. Free Santa hats will be provided for all runners and soup and mince pies will be available at the finish line. More than 40 people have already signed up for this year?s run, which is in aid of the Mayor?s five charities, Sue Ryder, the Chiltern Centre for disabled children, Headway, Riverside Counselling and Age UK Oxfordshire.

Mayor Stefan Gawrysiak said: ?We are hoping to get around 200 people this year, which would be an improvement on last year?s 130.

?In the last two years I have dressed up as a fairy and a ballerina, so this year I will definitely be dressing up as something but I won?t say what just yet. It?s a real community event for families, children, parents and grannies ? you can even bring your dog. The important thing is it?s lots of fun.?

Town councillor Pam Phillips, who was Mayor for the first run and is helping to organise this year?s event, said: ?It?s really about the community as much as raising money. The taking part is the important bit.

?In the last two years there have been lots of laughs with everyone dressed up and it?s just lots of fun.?

Members of The Henley College Wasps academy squad will be stewarding the race. Flanker Jack Willis said: ?We will be making sure people go on the right route but will also be taking part ourselves to raise money for our tour next year.

?It?s all about having a bit of fun, getting involved and giving back to the community.?

Parking charges at the town council car park in Mill Meadows will be suspended from 9am to 11am on the day.
