Charity pub tree

ABOUT £550 was raised for the cancer charity CLIC Sargent at the switching on of Wargrave’s Christmas tree lights.

ABOUT £550 was raised for the cancer charity CLIC Sargent at the switching on of Wargrave’s Christmas tree lights.

More than 50 people watched as the 12ft spruce in the car park of the Greyhound pub in High Street was lit up.

The countdown was led by Rev Jon Drake, curate at St Mary’s Church.

Children sang carols, mulled wine was served and Father Christmas handed out presents.

The Retros, a two-piece band comprising Dave Viney and Rob Oliphant, then played at the pub.

The total raised included all the takings from the pub that evening.

Landlord Phil Linstead, who organised the event, said: “Everyone seemed to have a good time.”
