WHEN Sir Steve Redgrave took over as chairman he literally had problems getting his feet under the table.
His office at the Henley Royal Regatta’s headquarters included an old wooden desk which had been used by both his two predecessors, Mike Sweeney and Peter Coni.
Sir Steve didn’t want to throw the desk away but could not squeeze his 6ft 4.75in frame under it as his legs would get stuck on a drawer on the underside.
He eventually devised a drastic but effective solution by sawing off the drawer to give himself some extra clearance.
He says: “I tried raising it on blocks to begin with but then it was uncomfortably high for writing on and using the computer.
“No one knows how old that desk is or where it came from but I thought it was lovely and I was determined to hang on to it.”
