Swans removed to keep the peace during regatta

MORE than 30 swans were removed from the River Thames in Henley during the royal regatta.

MORE than 30 swans were removed from the River Thames in Henley during the royal regatta.

Organisers didn’t want crews clashing with any of the birds that usually call the 2km course their home in case either one was injured.

The operation was carried out by staff from Swan Support, which took the swans to its base at Datchet, where it usually rehabilitates injured and sick birds.

The birds were returned to the river this week.

Wendy Hermon, treatment centre co-ordinator, said: “It went really well. We had four boats and about 10 people every day of the regatta, who were patrolling the river constantly just keeping birds off the course.”
