Festive fund-raiser

FATHER Christmas and his elves took part in a 5km fun run to raise money for the Friends

FATHER Christmas and his elves took part in a 5km fun run to raise money for the Friends of Benson Library on Saturday

The 32 runners from the Benson Striders and Salstix Nordic Walking group started at Benson parish hall and went up Crown Lane, down High Street to the library, along Oxford Road past the primary school and Three Horseshoes pub.

Some of the runners then went to the BP garage while others visited the Waterfront Cafe to ask for donations. They then headed back and repeated the loop twice more.

Club founder Julia Hayes said: “It was really fun and we had a great response. We had lots of people in cars stopping, opening their windows and giving us money, and people were standing in the centre of the village cheering us on.

“We had a big party back at my house afterwards with coffee and cakes so it was a great way to start Christmas. We’re quite a sociable club and we don’t take ourselves too seriously.”

She said the library was a great asset to the village and was well used.

The event raised £330. A stall manned by volunteers raised another £50.
