HENLEY will be decorated with a record-breaking number of summer hanging baskets in time for the Queen’s 90th birthday.
In the past week 56 orders have been placed with Henley in Bloom, taking the total number of baskets to 220 and beating last year’s record of 209. This is the fourth year running a record has been set.
The red, white and blue baskets are due to be delivered by the end of the month in time for Her Majesty’s official birthday celebrations on June 11 and 12.
Eleven residents of Queen Street have each ordered a basket in time for their street party on June 11. Resident Maggie Atkinson, who has ordered one, said: “Our street is famous for being a brilliant community so lots of people are making the extra effort.
“Last year my neighbour had a basket flowering all the way through until November. It was incredible and was stunning.
“This year we all wanted one because they’re red, white and blue for the Queen’s birthday.”
Pizza Express in Market Place will have four hanging baskets — the first year the chain restaurant has ordered any.
Manager Andy Taylor said: “We’re trying to involve ourselves more with the things that are going in Henley and this is one of the ways of doing that.
“I joined the store just before Christmas and my area manager is new to the company and we’re planning on getting involved with things in Henley rather than just being a big corporate.
“The baskets will make the frontage look attractive and if other businesses and residents are doing it then it makes the whole place have more of a community feel.”
Town councillor Kellie Hinton, vice-chairwoman of Henley in Bloom, said: “It’s outstanding that we have managed to beat our record again this year and it shows how valuable the campaign is.
“The floral impact is going to be absolutely massive and because of the huge number of orders we have recieved the town is going to look beautiful.
“This is a way people can join in with the celebrations for the Queen.”
The baskets will contain petunia surfinia blue vein (white with blue), petunia surfinia (red), pelargonium peltatum ivy leaved geranium (red), lobelia sapphire (blue), scaevola (blue), verbena tapien blue violet (blue) and begonia dragon wing (red).
Orders for baskets can be made until the end of next week.
Cllr Hinton added: “It would be wise for people to get in touch as soon as possible. We’re still waiting to hear from a number of chain stores.”
A basket costs £60, including VAT, which is £1 less than last year. A discount of £20 will be given on orders of 10 or more baskets. Supply and installation of a bracket to hang a basket on costs £22.
