Town Hall packed out for Regatta 2016 draw

HUNDREDS of rowers filled Henley town hall for this year’s Henley Royal Regatta draw

HUNDREDS of rowers filled Henley town hall for this year’s Henley Royal Regatta draw.

Crews watched in anticipation as Sir Steve Redgrave, chairman of the regatta, drew names out of the Grand Challenge Cup on Saturday afternoon.

Some people sat on the floor around the edge of the hall or stood at the back while others had to stand near the stairs outside.

Sir Steve was helped with the draw by regatta president Mike Sweeney who put the names of teams into the cup so they could be drawn out.

The selected crews for each of the 20 events were drawn first in order to keep them apart before the rest were drawn.

Sir Steve, a five-times Olympic rowing gold medallist, announced that every race would be broadcast and live streamed through BT Sport.

He added: “The cameras do pick up noise so I ask you to conduct yourselves in a way that your crew, clubs and sport would be proud of.”
