Resolve to learn how to dance

A CHRISTMAS dance marked the end of a full year of ballroom and latin dancing for the Miles School of Dancing in Henley.

Those that took their first tentative steps on to the dance floor back at the beginning of 2014 as a New Year’s resolution were jiving, waltzing and cha-cha-ing round the floor in their finest garb to all the best Christmas tunes, along with many others who have joined the Henley dance classes throughout this year.

Also among the merry gathering were the advanced class dancers which included no less than four 2014 national champions and 16 other national finalists.

The evening was also an opportunity for the Miles family, who run the school together, to present some annual awards for various individual performances.

A new Strictly Beginners Glitterball, awarded to the individual or couple who have embraced the spirit of the 2014 beginners’ classes, was presented to Donald and Denise Donaldson.

Donald and Denise travel from Andover every Monday evening with smiles all round, to join a group of friends for the class followed by a good catch-up in the pub afterwards. Nothing stops them short of bad weather, and their perseverance with tricky moves like the spin turn has paid off as they waltzed round the floor together like they had been dancing for years.

Other 2014 awards were won by Francesca Canarrozzo for the highest exam marks in the Saturday children’s class, Gemma Hart and Georgina Seville for the highest adult exam marks, Georgina Seville for the best performance at the National Finals held in Blackpool and Gemma Hart for the coveted most improved dancer of the year.

Classes continue next year from Monday, January 12, with a new absolute beginners’ class from 7pm to 8pm in Henley town hall.
