Gomes is happy with graduates

JOSE GOMES praised the club’s young players after witnessing his side’s comprehensive defeat against promotion-chasing Leeds United on Tuesday night.

The Reading manager had an injury-hit squad to choose from and so started 50th academy graduate Ryan East alongside Danny Loader and introduced Michael Olise as a substitute in the second half.

Leeds scored three in the opening 45 minutes at the Madejski Stadium to return to the top of the Championship.

Gomes admitted that while his players needed to be better at their final ball, he was pleased with how his young players performed.

He said: “The result does not show the performance. We are not happy with the result, but we have a lot of positive things.

“My players did a lot of positive things that we must catch for the future... and also the way that the young players that played today. They didn’t show any kind of afraid.”

Reading came into the game off the back of a 97th-minute win against fellow strugglers Wigan Athletic and will travel to Stoke tomorrow (Saturday, kick-off 3pm).

Gomes added: “On Saturday we couldn’t celebrate and now we cannot cry. We must prepare and give again the confidence to the players and the motivation to be ready for the next game.”
