Deflected goal proves decisive

WOODCOTE/STOKE ROW returned to action for the first time in a month and triumphed in their Reading Saturday League John Dell Senior Division clash at home to Mortimer, who were playing their first match of the year.

A frenetic start saw the visitors take the game to the hosts and force three early corners which were dealt with comfortably by the home defence.

Play was soon switched to the other end as Ross Weatherstone’s goalbound header was cleared off the line. The same player was unlucky not to open his account when, after four minutes, his header was tipped over by the Mortimer keeper.

Weatherstone did not have to wait much longer to give his side the lead. On 15 minutes a Frank Dillon corner was only half cleared by the Mortimer defence and Weatherstone pounced to rifle home a low shot from 12 yards.

Mortimer hit back and Kane Roberts in the home goal did well to palm a cross clear under heavy pressure from an attacker.
