Red Kites fade away in final league match of season

HENLEY TOWN lost their final Hellenic League Division 1 East match of the season as they went down by the odd goal in seven at Penn and Tylers Green on Monday evening in a match that was brought to an early conclusion due to fading light, writes Graham Harris.

Played on an undulating surface, Henley appeared to settle first, Graham Simms’ shot whistling just wide of the goal. Shortly after a good move between Faherty, Witt and Howell allowed Kites’ striker Howell to score the first goal for the visitors after 14 minutes.

Matt Godwin was shown a yellow card after a heavy clash with Alex Sethi, resulting in the Penn player leaving the field.

Soon after Mitch Cooper sent a header over the bar, from a good cross by Sheppard. Chris Hurst looked sharp for the home side but Henley looked more dangerous in the first half.

A Dan Faherty cross was well met by Matt Godwin, who saw his effort fly over the crossbar. Jason Bryant struck a drive goalwards, Fairchild pushing the ball on to the crossbar and safety. The hosts equalised three minutes into the second half when Hurst audaciously looped the ball over advancing Kites keeper Fairchild. Three minutes later the home side took the lead when a ball from Danny Jordan found substitute Gary Crick who drove the ball low into the net.
