WOODCOTE’S interest in the Oxfordshire Senior Cup came to an end on Saturday as they fell at the quarter-final stage at home to Carterton of the Hellenic Division 1.
Woodcote were unable to replicate the form which saw them beat North Leigh in the previous round. In difficult heavy conditions, with an attendance of around 100 spectators, Carterton started strongly and took the lead with a header from a corner after eight minutes.
Woodcote gradually grew into the game and both Toby Nowell and Fraser Sharples were thwarted in one-on-one situations by the visiting keeper. Hopes were raised just before half-time when Nowell received the ball in the box, turned and finished with a clinical strike.
Early in the second half Sam Primmer found himself in space but after an original hesitation the keeper recovered to save.
On 50 minutes Carterton restored their lead with a great strike and shortly afterwards their keeper had to leave the field after clashing with Tommy Brownlow leaving them to play the rest of the match with 10 players.
Woodcote then had their best period, but every attack was repelled and Carterton made it 3-1 as normal time came to an end.
In the lengthy time added on Woodcote were awarded a penalty when Andy Taylor was brought down. Tommy Brownlow converted the spot kick, but Carterton held on to secure their place in the semi-finals.
