Missed opportunities prove costly for hosts

WATLINGTON TOWN are still seeking their first North Berks League win after failing to take their chances and allowing opponents Berinsfield to gradually get back in the game to grind out a victory.

The hosts got off to a bright start with Ben Little having the first opportunity in the opening minute taking a pop from 30 yards that went just wide of the left hand upright.

Jon Little pounced on a poor back-pass but fired across goal from 12 yards out. Watlington got the early breakthrough on the 10 minute mark. Pete Ashman played a one-two with Neal Carrington down the left flank before crossing the ball to Zach Gallagher at the far post. Gallagher controlled the ball well and fired a half-volley into the back of the net.

Watlington could have doubled their lead five minutes later but Jon Little’s low right-footed drive from the edge of the area brought out a fine low one-handed save from Simon Matthews diving to his right.

Berinsfield gradually started to come into the game and Dave Murphy saw his 27th minute drive ricochet off two defenders before being cleared away.
