Day’s header lifts United up to second

HEAVY rain and sleet wiped out all bar two of last Sunday’s league matches.

HEAVY rain and sleet wiped out all bar two of last Sunday’s league matches.

Of the matches that were played GORING UNITED moved up to second place in Division 1 West thanks to a 2-1 home win over FOX AND HOUNDS RESERVES.

Following an even opening to the game, Goring took the lead after good set-up play from George Whitby set up Tom Purser to fire home from 20 yards after 35 minutes.

As conditions deteriorated, the pitch became extremely muddy and heavy.

With 20 minutes of the game remaining Fox and Hounds Reserves equalised from a goalmouth scramble following a free kick.

With both sides looking for a winner Goring came up with a goal five minutes from time when Jon Day scored with a close-range header again after a goalmouth scramble.

AFC HENLEY’S Division 4 East fixture away to WOODFORD PARK was switched to Jubilee Park due to Woodford’s pitch being waterlogged.

Woodford Park raced into a 2-0 half-time lead. During the second half AFC Henley hit the back of the net with a well-worked counterattack leading to Adam Henley playing a low cross into the box for Matt Eggleton to place into the bottom right-hand corner.

With AFC Henley pushing for an equaliser Woodford Park broke away to score their third of the game.
