ONLY six out of 21 scheduled Reading Saturday League matches survived the wet weather last Saturday

Of the matches played, WOODCOTE/STOKE ROW scored three first-half goals at READING YMCA to move five points clear at the top of the John Dell Senior Division and stretch their unbeaten run to 11 games.

Woodcote found themselves in front after seven minutes when Jake Dillon chased a long ball from goalkeeper Mark Pearson to slide the ball home for 1-0.

On 15 minutes the lead might have been increased when Gareth Evans’ free kick struck both uprights before rebounding to safety.

Soon afterwards Dillon had a good chance to double the lead but he shot tamely at the keeper.

After a series of attacks came to nothing, Ryan Corbett was brought down in the box on 35 minutes and Dillon converted the penalty.

The home goalkeeper made a fine save from Dillon at the expense of a corner which he failed to clear allowing captain Jim Hancock to head home at the far post from close range on 40 minutes.

YMCA started the second half by winning a series of corners that came to nothing and Woodcote continued to look dangerous on the break with Dillon going close twice before the hour mark. The home side kept hold of possession but Woodcote’s defence held with goalkeeper Pearson not having to make a serious save.

Thomas Bray netted a hat-trick as WARGRAVE boosted their Division 1 survival chances with a 4-2 win away at WINNERSH RANGERS. Jason Heath netted the visitors’ other goal.

l Only one match was played in the Reading and District Sunday League. All other matches were postponed due to waterlogged pitches.
