NEW Henley Town manager Cyril Fairchild saw his side pick up their first win of the season at home to AFC Hinksey on Tuesday, writes Michael Trendall.

The Red Kites roared into a two goal lead, were pegged back to 2-2 before scoring twice in the last 10 minutes to secure all three Uhlsport Hellenic League Division 1 East points.

The hosts were a goal up after just five minutes when Mitchell Cooper fired home from the penalty spot following a foul in the area.

Five minutes later Billy Gordon twisted through several defenders and passed to Sam Cripps to double the lead.

Hinksey came into the game more and three times Warren Baxter cleared the ball while Ashley East saved low down from Tarbor. Odhiambo missed from three yards, ballooning the ball over East’s bar while Cripps was tripped by Willoughby for the first caution of the match.

Just before half-time Constant wriggled his way round the Henley defence and this time Odhiambo made no mistake to fire home for the visitors.

After 73 minutes Hinksey equalised when Lee Sharkey went on a mazy run to set up Dunmall to score. Play then went end-to-end but as the visitors poured forward in search of a winner, Henley’s midfield found gaps and Baker attempted to lob Beames who fingertipped the ball over his crossbar.

The Red Kites took the lead when Sanchez Commack fired home in a tangle in the goalmouth with the final shot hitting a defender and bouncing over the goal line.

Graham Simms was cautioned as Hinksey went for another equaliser and the Henley goal bore a charmed life as the ball flashed across East’s goalmouth. With two minutes go, Commack unleashed a low drive that flew past Beames into the far corner to secure the points.

A GOAL in each half by hosts Headington and a missed penalty by Henley Town saw the Red Kites go down to an opening day Uhlsport Hellenic League Division 2 East defeat away to last season’s runners-up on Saturday.

Both teams started slowly but it was the home side that went ahead after 10 minutes when Henley made mistakes at the back and although Ashley East saved a shot with his left hand, Ollie Zaja was on hand to tap the ball home.

Soon after Henley’s Brett Rann was fouled but he sent the resulting free kick wide. Sam Cripps crossed from the right but Jenkins caught the ball at the second attempt.

Headington had the better of the play and East had to be alert to tip a Zaja shot over the bar. Soon after Rann and Adam Jeffrey swapped wings and Henley looked more dangerous.

Shaun Jacob received the first yellow card of the match before Jamie Fairchild shot wide.

Henley began brightly in the second half with Rann bursting through from midfield to hit the post and as Sawyer closed in the flag went up for offside.

Rann again ran between the home defenders and was brought down but not unfairly according to the referee. Rann then got into a tangle with the opposition and received a yellow card.

Jeffrey was substituted by Ross Baker who had a long lob saved by Jenkins who dealt well with crosses and punched the ball away a good distance several times to thwart the Henley attackers.

Zaja forced East to save with his leg from close range as Headington played towards their supporters at the clubhouse end.

Cuff picked up a yellow card before his side appealed for a penalty. Soon after Jamie Fairchild was replaced by Louis Howell.

With 75 minutes gone, the home side worked the ball down the right hand side and a cross cum shot hit the underside of the bar and Zaja was on hand to tap home again.

Henley came back with Mitch Cooper heading a free kick wide and with five minutes to go, referee Adam Dewar awarded Henley a penalty for a fould in the area but Rann’s spot kick went wide.

Henley Town: A East, S Cripps, D Faherty, K Sims, W Baxter, M Cooper, A Jeffreys (R Barker), J Fairchild (L Howell), J Sawyer, M Goodwin, B Rann.
