THIS was a spirited performance by the Red Kites, resulting in a 4-1 victory over a young, enterprising Maidenhead side, writes Graham Harris.

Henley kicked off the first half, on a very pleasant evening, in this Uhlsport Division One fixture.

Richard Thomas and Warren Baxter hit the post and bar respectively for Henley in the early stages. A probing shot by Jonathan Hippolyte was saved by East after 15 minutes.

Kai Walters was taken off by United after suffering a cut. A corner by Adam Jeffrey found Matt Godwin, whose powerful header was handled on the line by Callum Ferguson just after the half-hour.

Ferguson was shown a red card and Graham Sims converted from the spot. Hippolyte proved a handful for the Henley defence as Maidenhead fought for an equaliser. A minute before half-time Billy Gordon’s cross found Sims, who blasted the ball past Sam Grays to make it 2-0 to the Red Kites.

Maidenhead produced fluent passes, attacking football in the second half and were rewarded with a penalty for a foul on Bradley Shaw by Karl Simms in the area. Hippolyte stepped up to score.

Both sides made substitutions as the game ebbed and flowed from end to end. Henley went on the attack with Richard Thomas finding Jeffrey, whose pinpoint cross allowed Sanchez Commack to find the net, in the 62nd minute. Frantic football followed, and a scuffle just outside the area gave Maidenhead a free-kick, on this occasion the ball was blasted over the bar.

Maidenhead’s Jonny Giles was a constant thorn in the Henley side, working hard in midfield and attack.

The game was settled a minute into injury time, when Jeffrey received a ball from Sam Cripps, ran through the Maidenhead defence and unleashed a fierce shot that Grays had no chance of stopping.

It was a satisfactory result from the Red Kites and a workmanlike performance, resulting in valuable points for the club.
