North bags double as Hambleden hit back

HAMBLEDEN won their opening Wycombe and District League Senior Division match of the season with victory at Great Missenden.

HAMBLEDEN won their opening Wycombe and District League Senior Division match of the season with victory at Great Missenden.

Hambleden pressed from the off and could have gone ahead on 11 minutes after Wilkins blazed over when well placed in the area.

The visitors took the lead when a goal kick by Ross Hathaway fell to Brown who took two touches before lobbing the advancing keeper.

Hambleden could have extended their lead when North squandered an effort from six yards that hit the bar.

On 32 minutes Irving struggled to cut out a Missenden cross, Lakovic failed to get any distance with his clearance and Brian challenged clumsily when the ball was instantly returned. The referee had no hesitation in pointing to the spot and Missenden equalised from the resulting penalty. Things could have been worse for Hambleden when in injury time a long ball eluded Hambleden’s defence and Missenden’s Keene advanced one-on-one with the visiting keeper.

Hathaway stood tall and Keene couldn’t find the finish steering his effort off the outside of the post and away for a goal kick.

On the 68th minute another driving Missenden run of play caught Hambleden flat footed and Keene’s strong strike from the edge of the area was parried by Hathaway but only into the path of the advancing Gringer who put the hosts ahead.

Kemp then moved infield allowing Brown to foray down the right. This had an immediate effect as Irving’s challenge allowed Chivers and Wilkins to fashion a ball to Kemp behind the striker. Kemp’s guided pass saw North cut in from the left and his shot brushed the fingers of the Missenden keeper and found its way into the bottom corner for the equaliser.

Chivers was replaced with substitute and senior debutant I Rhydian who had progressed through Hambleden’s development system to earn his place on the bench.

Rhydian was soon involved and after picking the ball from deep he combined with Wilkins to set Brown free down the right. Brown’s cross deflected back into the path of Rhydian on the edge of the area where the midfielder sidestepped a challenge before being sent crashing to the ground on the edge of the area.

From the resultant free kick North’s deflected shot saw Reading connect from three yards out but his effort looped over.

Rhydian provided the quality moment that settled the game. Finding himself in an advanced position his precision pass, angled from the edge of the box, split the Missenden defence in two. Brown latched on to the ball and rolled his cross back across the face of the goal to find North who sidefooted the ball into an empty net.
