AFC HENLEY HOTSPURS U12s went down to a 2–1 home defeat against local rivals WARGRAVE WOLVES U12s in East Berks League at Jubilee Park on Saturday.
Wargrave were the quicker side to settle, and a well struck corner caused confusion in the Henley penalty area, the ball eventually ricocheting into the net off a Henley defender.
Henley tried to get back into the game but the well organised Wolves defence kept them at bay and when they did break through the visitors’ goalkeeper was a match for anything the Hotspurs forwards could create.
As the game approached half–time the Wargrave right winger broke clear down the flank and his cross shot was deflected into the net to put the Wolves 2–0 up. The Hotspurs started the second half more brightly but again found the Wolves keeper in top form.
After making several good saves Luke Freeman wriggled through the defence and blasted in an unstoppable shot to finally beat the keeper and get Henley back in the game.
However, try as they might a combination of the Wolves’ tough tackling and some more saves by their keeper meant Wargrave held on to secure all three points.
