ROTHERFIELD UNITED U12s ran out 1-0 winners in their final Oxford Youth League Division 1 match
ROTHERFIELD UNITED U12s ran out 1-0 winners in their final Oxford Youth League Division 1 match of the season at ABINGDON YOUTH U12s on Monday evening to avoid relegation.
Going into the match, a win for either side would ensure their survival in the division and condemn their opponents to the drop.
Rotherfield started brightly but Abingdon looked marginally stronger in midfield and attack, but were unable to get past the solid Rotherfield defence of Aaron Bishop, Joe Macdonald and Charlie Masters.
Goalkeeper Max Hanshaw was tested hard and was playing as a sweeper, but nearly fell foul when he was sent to the ground by a tackle at the edge of his box, leaving the goal open, the Abingdon shot being cleared off the line by Macdonald.
In the second half, Charlie Wagstaff was put into the striker position, swapping his right wing role with Justus Larter, his pace down the middle stretching the Abingdon squad out, allowing Rotherfield room to play.
Daniel Watts was brought on for Masters in right back and Macdonald moved forward on the left wing exchanging places with Cuthbertson.
A quick attack was formed by Watts winning the ball from a loose Abingdon run, passing it through to White, who threaded it through to Larter on the right. Larter took it to the byline in a tousle with two Abingdon defenders, driving it towards the goal to take a shot that the Abingdon keeper parried across the goal to the feet of Macdonald who turned and tapped it home.
Rotherfield kept the pressure up for a few more minutes when in answer to an Abingdon tactical manoeuvre where they put two strikers up, man-of-the-match Macdonald was brought back into defence to make sure the three points were kept safe.
ROTHERFIELD DOMINATORS U11s had an exciting close to the season. Against WOKINGHAM AND EMMBROOK RANGERS U11s The Dominators came out strong and took control of the first half with an early goal by Ethan Spiers.
This was soon followed by a goal straight from the corner kick by Oliver Pryce. A further goal from Edward Handley saw the Dominators 3-0 up at half time.
The second half brought two more goals from Pryce and Jude Kaye and despite some good goalkeeping by Felix Wall the opposition sunk two goals of their own to reduce the score to 5-2. Ethan Spiers was named man of the match.
The final game of the season saw the Dominators defeat WHITEKNIGHTS FALCONS U11s 2-1.
The Dominators staked their claim early on in the game with some strong runs and a goal by Ethan Spiers. This was soon followed by another from Edward Handley.
The Falcons tried to fight back in the second half with attack after attack but, with good saves by Felix Wall, only managed to score one goal. Jude Kaye was named man-of-the-match.
