Treble not enough as Town grab late leveller

HOSTS WOODCOTE/STOKE ROW were held to a 3-3 draw against NEWBURY TOWN in the Premier Division last Saturday.

HOSTS WOODCOTE/STOKE ROW were held to a 3-3 draw against NEWBURY TOWN in the Premier Division last Saturday.

With the gale force wind in their favour the home side somehow contrived to concede two goals in the first 10 minutes.

As early as the second minute Carl Smith lost possession on the edge of his own area and the Newbury player finished well to make it 1-0. After seven minutes it might have been 1-1, but Dave Givens’ strike from 20 yards rebounded off the crossbar.

The visitors went 2-0 up after 10 minutes when they headed home from a corner.

After 20 minutes the post came to Newbury’s rescue once again as Jonny Summers saw his shot rebound off an upright. The woodwork came to the rescue yet again moments later to deny Toby Nowell and Summers just before the interval.

Two minutes into the second half Summers hit the woodwork again before having two shots charged down in quick succession as the home side showed a marked improvement against the wind. Woodcote/Stoke Row’s efforts were rewarded on the hour mark as Nowell headed home at the near post for 2-1 from Dave Givens’ corner. On 70 minutes Nowell was brought down in full flight on the edge of the box by a defender but the referee deemed it only a yellow card offence and the free kick was wasted. Two minutes later Nowell was put in the clear by Summers and shot past the keeper to make it 2-2.

On 75 minutes Woodcote took the lead with a penalty. Summers was brought down by a clumsy tackle and Nowell grabbed the ball to complete his hat-trick and make it 3-2.

With five minutes remaining the hosts failed to deal with a regulation cross and a Newbury player headed home for 3-3.

In Division 2 WOODCOTE/STOKE ROW RESERVES gave a battling performance to draw 1-1 away at promotion-chasing MARLOW UNITED RESERVES.

Paul Knox equalised an earlier Marlow goal in a match which saw Woodcote dominate the second half.

Elswhere in the division GORING UNITED ran out 5-1 winners at home to WARGRAVE while basement side SONNING crashed to a 7-1 defeat at FC IMAAN LIONS.

In Division 5 GORING UNITED RESERVES lost out 2-1 away to WOODLEY UNITED B.
