Red Kites to put erratic Wasps to the test

HENLEY TOWN will make a second attempt to travel to Chalfont Wasps for a league fixture tomorrow (Saturday), kicking off at 3pm,

writes John Bailey.

The match was originally scheduled for November 14 but a waterlogged pitch caused a postponement.

This is the second season running in which numerous results in Division 1 East of the Uhlsport Hellenic League have defied logic, but, if many sides including Henley have steered erratic courses, none has been less predictable than Wasps.

In their last five outings they have lost 6-0 at Finchampstead, then drawn away to championship favourites Penn and Tylers Green, following this by losing 5-1 at home to Headington before beating the same opponents at the Barton Recreation Ground. Finally, they lost 5-0 at Old Woodstock against struggling opponents.

Over the years, Henley have won 33 times in the sides’ 60 meetings to date, with only one game drawn. They achieved the double against Wasps last season.

Having taken the field only once this year, the Red Kites did not welcome the fact that they had no competitive game arranged for last weekend, but by Monday morning they had been able to arrange a friendly at home to Eton Wick. On Wednesday conditions were looking bleak at the Invesco Perpetual Triangle and so the game was transferred to Eton Wick, but by Friday their pitch was also unplayable.

On Tuesday Henley Town had to hand their Bluefin Hellenic Supplementary Cup second round tie to hosts Carterton as they were unable to raise a side.

Ground conditions over the Hellenic League area were patchy last weekend, but Division 1 East was again hit especially hard, with only one of five games surviving. Waterlogging also caused the postponement of the Sunday team’s game, while the youths were unable to raise a team to visit Beaconsfield SYCOB.

This week, the Sunday side visit Charvil Rangers in the league, kick-off 10.30am, before, on Wednesday, the youths entertain Abbey Rangers, also in a league fixture, kick-off 7.45pm.
