Henley Hurricanes blow Pumas away

AFC HENLEY HURRICANES U14s produced their best performance of the season to see off high-flying PINEWOOD PUMAS U14s

AFC HENLEY HURRICANES U14s produced their best performance of the season to see off high-flying PINEWOOD PUMAS U14s 3-0 in the East Berks League.

On a wet, cold morning on a heavy pitch, the Hurricanes hit the ground running and were ahead after just one minute, Jake Jones crossing to Marco de Sousa whose shot was buried in the corner.

As the half wore on Pinewood created a few half chances and could have got themselves level but the Hurricanes worked hard to resist the home team’s attacks and play on the break, creating chances of their own, including Jones being put through one-on-one but pulling the ball just wide.

A challenge on Marco de Sousa resulted in him limping from the field and reducing the Hurricanes to a bare 11 on the half hour mark.

A reshuffle at half-time to a 3-5-2 formation proved effective and saw the Hurricanes take the game to the Pumas.

Ed Lawrence slotted in as the sweeper, providing the extra cover to nullify any Pinewood attack and man-of-the-match Victor Sanchez was dogged, determined and unbeatable, ensuring the Hurricanes kept a clean sheet. Gabriel Langford and Christian Oswald were given licence to get further forward and both became more involved in the match as a result. Ben Stodolnic, on his return from injury, gave an assured display as the holding midfielder and this provided the platform for the attacking players to go and play. Time and again Jones was released to terrorise the left-back and after a number of crosses went begging and half-chances came and went, he drove through on his own and smashed a swerving ball past the keeper to the bottom corner.

It was left to Pearce to finish the scoring when blocked shots from Jones and Clark fell to him around the penalty spot to thump the ball home and seal the win. Victor Sanchez was named the Hurricanes’ man-of-the-match.
